Well, this is a bit exciting, isn’t it? I’ve only gone and won the Creative Talent Champion award at the We Are Creative Awards! Even better—it’s a huge win for freelancers in the West Midlands and beyond. 🎉
Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Alison, weren’t you already championing freelancers?” Yes, absolutely. But now it’s official. And let’s be honest, if there’s one thing freelancers love, it’s official recognition.
This award isn’t just about me (though I won’t lie, it does feel rather lovely). It’s about all the incredible freelancers I’ve had the privilege of working with, mentoring, and championing over the years. Freelancers are the lifeblood of the creative industries, and if I can help even one more person turn their creative talent into a thriving business, then I consider that a win.
Freelancing is a positive career choice.
When I wrote The Freelance Bible, my mission was clear, help creatives make freelancing work for them. I wanted to demystify freelancing, make it accessible, and, most importantly, show people how to turn their skills into a sustainable freelance career.
Through Mission Accomplished, training programmes, and workshops, I’ve spent years helping freelancers own their careers – learning to sell their skills, negotiate like pros, and (drumroll, please) get paid what they’re worth! Because let’s be honest, there’s no reason why creatives shouldn’t be rewarded for their skills and experiences in the same way as accountants, lawyers and doctors are.
This award? It’s just the beginning.
Winning this award is a wonderful appreciation of all my work to date. But I’m not done yet. There are still too many freelancers—especially here in the Midlands’ buzzing creative scene underselling themselves, avoiding the business side of creativity, and playing it small when they should be owning their value and larging it up.
So, if you’re freelancing (or thinking about it), let this be your reminder:
- Your creative skills are valuable. Stop waiting for permission – you’re already a professional.
- Freelancing isn’t just about talent – it’s about running a business. And that’s a skill set you can learn.
- Networking, visibility, and confidence are your best assets. People work with those they know, like, and trust. Make sure you’re showing up, and with a smile on your face.
