Great British Menu - Runner Applications 1Optomen Television have entry level roles for new dynamic and energetic team members to work on BBC2 primetime series Great British Menu.
Great British Menu is BBC2’s premium cookery competition, where the nation’s top professional chefs compete for the chance to cook at a six-course finale banquet.
In 2022 Great British Menu returns for its 17th series and will see 32 chefs from 8 UK regions compete to be regional champion, then go through to compete for a prestigious place cooking at the Banquet finale.
Series 17 will be filming this Autumn in Stratford Upon Avon (September to December) and we need YOU!
No previous work experience is required but we are looking for people who can start early September 2021

PRODUCTION RUNNER (1 vacancy available)

Dates: Monday 13th September – Friday 3rd December 2021

5 days a week and two week breaks possibly in between these dates w/c 25th October and w/c 22nd November.
Requirements – 21 or over. Full UK driving license. Access to private transport to and from Stratford Upon Avon.
As a production runner, you will work on a daily shift basis (up to 10 hours) with our production co-ordinators and production managers to help keep our show running. This will include assisting the production office with:

Shopping for last minute ingredients, kitchen equipment or dish props.
Assisting the production co-ordinator and manager in the on-site production office with studio facilities.
Helping with deliveries and organising food and props.

Across all roles, you will have excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude and willingness to get involved where necessary. This role would suit someone super organised, knows the local area and good at spotting a bargain! For this role, you will need to have a full driving license, be 21 or over and for you to be comfortable driving a mini SUV hire car, of which we will provide including all necessary insurances. This role is perfect for someone wanting to see into the world of production management, and what it takes to get a series like Great British Menu on air.

SET RUNNER / ON SCREEN WAITING STAFF (2 vacancies available)

Dates: Monday 13th September – Friday 3rd December 2021

5 days a week and two week breaks possibly in between these dates w/c 25th October and w/c 22nd November.Requirements – 18 or over. Access to private transport to and from Stratford Upon Avon.
As a Set runner, you will work on a daily shift basis (up to 10 hours) with one of our studio departments to facilitate the filming of the series. This will include roles such as:

Filming team – assisting the camera and sound team in prepping and rigging kit, camera assisting and assisting on set.
Food Team – assisting the home economist and food producers sourcing for ingredients, organising deliveries, prepping the kitchen.
Talent – looking after all our on-screen talent – presenter, judges, guest judges, chefs, veteran chefs and special guests.
Across all roles, you will have excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude and willingness to get involved where necessary. This role would suit someone who can wants to learn the filming or producing side of television making, doesn’t like being bored and can work on their own initiative.

We are reducing the number of people we have on our set this year to keep Coronavirus risk to a minimum, so have combined this Set runner role with on screen waiting staff. These will be very short period during the day where you’ll be asked to carry one or two plates of food from one area of the studio to another on camera. For these roles, we ask you can be smart in appearance, willing to wear waiting staff attire (white shirt, black trousers/skirt which we can provide if you need) and have an open mind – some of our chefs like to include the waiting staff in their dishes presentation!

SOUND TRAINEE / SET RUNNER (1 vacancy available)

As a Set runner, you will work on a daily shift basis (up to 10 hours) with one of our studio departments to facilitate the filming of the series. This will include roles such as:

Filming team – assisting the camera and sound team in prepping and rigging kit, camera assisting and assisting on set.
Food Team – assisting the home economist and food producers sourcing for ingredients, organising deliveries, prepping the kitchen.
Talent – looking after all our on-screen talent – presenter, judges, guest judges, chefs, veteran chefs and special guests.

This new role involves being a Set runner on all but our judging days, which will see you step up into a sound recordist trainee. You’ll be working with the Sound Supervisor and Sound recordist prepping kit, assisting with microphones on contributors and recording audio for interviews. This would suit someone with an interest in audio – be it music, recording or audio engineering. Some experience, whether work experience or through school / college would be an advantage. You will have excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude and willingness to get involved where necessary.

KITCHEN PORTER (1 vacancy available)

GBM 17 Dates: Monday 20th September – Friday 3rd December 2021

5 days a week and two week breaks possibly in between these dates w/c 25th October and w/c 22nd November.Requirements – 18 or over. Access to private transport to and from Stratford Upon Avon.
Working with our Home Economist team you will work with the kitchen to ensure they have equipment, crockery and cutlery they need for their dishes. This is an excellent way in for anyone looking to entry the food events business and food television. This role would suit someone with commercial kitchen and/or hospitality experience.

The criteria for these roles are:

  • You must be minimum 18 or over. Some roles require over 21 (these are marked)
  • A method of transport to our studios in Stratford Upon Avon that does not involve public transport. This may be by walking / cycling, or access to a private vehicle. This is in line with our Covid-19 guidelines.
